As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Instructions for Journal Authors on Manuscript Preparation, Submission, and Peer Review

Peer Review
A paper is peer-reviewed for publication on the understanding that it is not being reviewed for publication simultaneously by another Journal, has not been accepted for publication elsewhere, and has not already been published. The Journal will publish original articles, review articles, case reports, and letters to the Editor. Contributions must be in English (British) Language and should be very concise.

Types of Article
Original articles may be in the clinical or laboratory medical sciences, not more than 3000 words with a maximum of six illustrations (figures and tables). Review articles are usually commissioned but, unsolicited reviews are welcome. A review article should be between 3000 and 3500 words, including references, and may contain illustrations (figures and tables). Case reports should not exceed 1500 words with four illustrations, and letters to the Editor should be at most 600 words long and may contain a maximum of two illustrations. Letters may be originated by the authors or be a reaction to previously published works in the Journal or on issues of relevance to Medicine and Medical Sciences.

Authors are requested to submit their articles online at the journal website: Submit Article; or in an electronic format as an e-mail attachment to editorojm@gmail.com (cc: judekenny2003@yahoo.com, hyginusekwunife@yahoo.com) or, as an electronic copy on a compact disc (CD) or, in a flash drive to the Editor, Orient Journal of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, PMB 5025 Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria, in Microsoft Word format of all documents, tables, and figures. Pictures should be of good resolution in JPEG format, and all manuscripts are subject to peer and editorial reviews.

Charges
Authors are required, at the submission of each article, to pay a sum of N15, 000 (Fifteen Thousand Naira only) as a processing fee at the Journal Office and obtain a written receipt, or pay into the Orient Journal of Medicine Bank Account Account:

Please, mail a scanned copy of the evidence of payment as an e-mail attachment to the Journal’s e-mail address. Upon acceptance of the article, a publication fee of N25,000 (Twenty Five Thousand Naira only) should be paid before the author's proof copy is mailed to the author and the paper transferred to the publisher. There are no extra charges for reproducing colour or black-and-white photographs.

Preparation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be arranged in the following sections: Title page, Abstract, Body of Text, any Acknowledgement(s), References, Tables, and Figures (with or without Legends for figures). All details about the Journal could be accessed at www.orientjom.org.


Title Page should give the following information: (1) title of the article (2) first name in full, the second name abbreviated and surname in full of the author(s), no titles or qualifications may be attached (3) the department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed for each author (4) name and address of the author for correspondences (5) sources of support in the form of grants (6) a running title and (7) four to seven keywords are required; none of which should have appeared in the article title.
The abstract should be structured and not more than 250 words. It should embody the Background, Objectives, Methodology, Results, and main Conclusions of the study, under appropriate sub-headings. Abstracts for case reports need not be structured.


Tables and Illustrations (Figures or Pictures) should have the relevant title, typed in brief, just above each one. Illustrations should be submitted in the JPEG format (or MS Word of reasonable size and high resolution to reduce the electronic byte load). Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and must be made reference to in the Results and/or Discussion sections in parenthesis

References
References should follow the Vancouver style, numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, situated at the end of the sentence in superscript after the full stop, within the manuscript. At the end of the article, the full list of references should give the surnames and initials of all authors if three or less. For more than three authors, the names of the first three authors should be followed by “et al” in italics. The authors’ names are followed by the title of the article, then the title of the journal abbreviated according to the style of the Index Medicus or written in full, the year of publication, the volume number, and the first and last page numbers. Titles of books should be followed by the names of any editors, publisher, edition, place of publication, year of publication, and relevant pages.
